Rhinoplasty in Columbus, Ohio
The nose is the most defining characteristic of the face and, as such, its shape and size greatly impacts the overall facial appearance. Even the slightest of alterations can significantly improve the appearance. It’s no surprise then that rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed today.
While some individuals seek nasal surgery to improve the function of their nose and address breathing issues, many others are looking to improve the appearance of the nose. Patients may be unhappy with the nose they were born with or how it has changed due to aging or injury. Whatever the reason for seeking nasal surgery, the result is a more attractive, well-functioning nose that balances the other facial features for an overall more beautiful facial appearance.
Candidates for Rhinoplasty
Candidates for rhinoplasty are generally in good health and have realistic expectations for improving the appearance and/or function of their nose. When it comes to younger patients, most surgeons advise that surgery only be performed once the nose has reached its full growth which occurs around the age of 14 for girls and a bit later for boys. During consultation, Dr. Smith will take many factors into account to determine whether or not rhinoplasty is right for you. Some of the more common things that individuals seek to change include a hump or bump on the nose, an overly large or overly small nose, an unattractive angle between the nose and upper lip, large or flared nostrils, and a bulbous or drooping tip.
The Rhinoplasty Surgery
Rhinoplasty is typically performed with general anesthesia and can compliment a facelift. There are two basic approaches used in rhinoplasty: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. With closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are confined to the inside of the nostrils which allows for no visible scarring. With open rhinoplasty, a very small incision is made on the strip of skin that separates the nostrils on the underside of the nose. While open rhinoplasty will result in a scar, it is very well-camouflaged.
Working through the incisions, Dr. Smith separates the skin from the underlying bone and cartilage. The desired shape is then achieved by removing, rearranging or adding to the cartilage and bone. The incisions are then sutured closed. The surgery takes an average of one to three hours to complete.
Following surgery, patients may experience some discomfort which can be managed with medication, as well as a feeling of stuffiness in the nose. Swelling and bruising are common and the area around the eyes, in particular, may appear bruised. Any nasal packing used is typically removed within a few days after surgery while dressings and splints are removed after one to two weeks. Most patients feel well enough to return to work and other normal activities within one week.
