Juvederm is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid gel injectable filler which pumps up the volume in the skin for a more youthful, radiant look. Injections are placed precisely beneath the skin to help smooth out facial wrinkles and folds. Juvederm has a slightly thicker consistency than other types of fillers, making it a good choice for moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. It is particularly effective in treating the nasolabial folds and marionette lines, as well as sagging contours in the jaw. It is also a good choice for lip augmentation for those who desire a more natural look and for reshaping the cheek contours. Many find that the gel consistency of Juvederm allows for smoother, more natural-looking results.Juvederm comes in several formulations. Juvederm Ultra is considered the regular filler while Juvederm Ultra Plus is used for deeper facial folds. Juvederm Ultra XC is the latest Juvederm formula and it contains lidocaine for enhanced comfort.
Candidates for treatment with Juvederm are in good physical health and are realistic in their expectations for improvement. Patients should understand that repeat treatments are needed in order to maintain the effect as results are temporary.
Juvederm injections are performed in the office setting and take just fifteen minutes or so to complete. A topical or local anesthetic or nerve block may be used during treatment. Because Juvederm Ultra XC contains lidocaine, patients typically find the injection to be very tolerable though a local anesthetic can still be used to numb the area. A very fine needle is used to inject the substance into the mid to deep dermis. Several tiny injections are made.
Side effects are generally rare with Juvederm but may include temporary bruising, swelling, redness or tenderness at the injections site. Nevertheless, patient can return to their normal activities right away. The results of Juvederm injections typically last six to eight months.
