Functional Medicine with Wendy F. Currier, NP-C, IFMCP, MSCP, RN, BS

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a holistic approach to identifying the underlying causes of health issues for those who are experiencing concerns while promoting health for those who feel well. Functional medicine is ideal for those who are ready to delve deeper into uncovering the root causes of their health issues or for those seeking preventative healthcare. By focusing on lifestyle enhancements in diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management, functional medicine promotes mental, emotional, and physical well-being. A treatment plan may involve a combination of lifestyle adjustments, supplements, prescriptions, and close follow-up, all geared towards addressing the individual as a whole.

The functional medicine approach helps us to see that our body systems don’t function in isolation and that our body systems influence one another. This holistic perspective is crucial in understanding how to treat health issues comprehensively.

Here’s a breakdown of how interconnected systems can impact overall health:

Endocrine System: Hormones regulate various bodily functions and can affect metabolism, mood, and reproductive health. Imbalances can influence other systems, such as the digestive system or cardiovascular health.

Digestive System: Gut health impacts nutrient absorption and can affect immune function and mental health. Issues like inflammation or imbalances in gut bacteria can have far-reaching effects on other systems.

Immune System: This system protects the body from pathogens and can be influenced by stress, diet, and gut health. Chronic inflammation or immune dysregulation can contribute to autoimmune conditions or systemic inflammation.

Cardiovascular System: Heart health is closely linked to metabolic processes, including those influenced by diet and hormones. Cardiovascular issues can affect overall energy levels and contribute to systemic health problems

Musculoskeletal System: The health of bones, muscles, and joints can be influenced by nutrition, hormone levels, and physical activity. This system’s health is also linked to metabolic and cardiovascular health.

In functional medicine, addressing one system often involves considering how it interacts with others. For example, improving gut health might not only aid digestion but also enhance immune function and reduce systemic inflammation. By evaluating and treating these interconnected systems holistically, functional medicine aims to promote overall health and well-being more effectively. When working with patients, Wendy’s primary objective is to pinpoint and address underlying deficiencies and barriers to restore optimal function to both the body and mind.

Functional Medicine Testing

Functional medicine testing is completed through blood, saliva, urine, breath, and stool. For many individuals, these objective tests offer a newfound clarity they’ve sought for years. By providing concrete data, testing facilitates a pathway toward optimal wellness. This journey requires a steadfast commitment from the patient to implement improvements and strive for their best health. Testing is personalized to each person’s health goals and concerns.

Specific tests offered include:

  • Hormone Levels: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA-S, cortisol, insulin, thyroid, vitamin D, leptin, melatonin, and more.
  • Hormone Metabolism: estrogen, androgens, progesterone, and cortisol. Hormone metabolism is the process by which hormones are made, used, and then eliminated from the body. This complex system ensures that hormones are present in the right amounts and at the right times to regulate various functions in the body. A thorough understanding of hormone metabolism is crucial for diagnosing and treating hormonal imbalances and related health issues.
  • Gut Health Testing: yeast, bacteria, and parasites as well as gut inflammation, digestion and absorption, gut microbiome metabolites, and more.
  • Food Sensitivity Testing: 87 common food sensitivities.
  • Minerals/Vitamin/Antioxident Testing: thorough nutrient evaluation through an at-home urine collection.
  • Mold Testing: screens for 11 different mycotoxins that can be causing vague and generalized symptoms.
  • Toxin testing: heavy metal testing completed through urine or blood.
  • And more!

*These tests are self-collected in the privacy of the home except for the blood work.
