Introduction to Dermal Fillers

At our award-winning medical practice in Columbus, dermal fillers are cosmetic injections used to add volume to the lips, cheeks, nose, and jaw. Recently, celebrities and influencers have been vocal about their aesthetic treatments, creating a major spike in non-surgical aesthetic solutions. Smith Facial Plastics offers specialty top-of-the-line dermal fillers that have a proven success rate. Below, we’ve included more information about the fillers we offer and frequently asked questions we get from our patients.

RHA Collection

The only FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler for dynamic wrinkles and folds

Dynamic wrinkles and folds appear in areas of the face that move repetitively. Your face is dynamic, making millions of movements and micro-movements every day. Movements like squinting, frowning, laughing, and talking create dynamic wrinkles and folds. These wrinkles and folds can be difficult to treat because dermal fillers may cause the area to appear stiff or unnatural when the face moves.

RHA® Collection is designed to be resilient enough to adapt to your facial movement, which may provide a more natural look at rest and in motion.

Why use RHA?

Designed to adapt seamlessly to the dynamic demands of the face to achieve a natural look.

Intentionally made to be more like the natural hyaluronic acid in your skin.

RHA® Collection uses a gentle manufacturing process. This helps preserve the natural structure of the HA, allowing it to more closely mimic the natural HA found in your skin.

The latest advancement in HA filler technology and only available at select practices.

The RHA® Collection is developed by TEOXANE Laboratories in Geneva, Switzerland. RHA® represents the latest advancement in hyaluronic acid filler technology and can only be found at practices that provide exceptional consumer experiences and outcomes.

The Procedure

Before this procedure, your doctor will provide a consultation in which you discuss why you are interested in the facial filler. This is a non-surgical procedure and the treatment time generally takes between fifteen and thirty minutes. Before starting, your face will be cleaned with a hygienic formula to prep the area for injection. A topical numbing cream will then be applied to the area, ensuring your comfort.

RHA Redensity

Redensity is our brand-new solution from RHA.  The solution is the latest in a line of non-invasive facial rejuvenation treatments. However, Redensity’s the first and only HA filler approved by the FDA for superficial and dermal injections. It treats moderate to severe perioral wrinkles.

Redensity Treatment Areas

RHA Redensity corrects moderate to severe perioral wrinkles around the mouth and lips. These lines are also known as:

  • Marionette lines
  • Lower lip lines
  • Lip lines
  • Vertical lip lines
  • Barcode lines
  • Smoker lines
  • Lipstick lines

This new filler is an anti-aging injectable that features a gentle formula. As a result, it can correct lip lines with natural-looking and long-lasting results.

Juvederm

Juvederm is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid gel injectable filler that pumps up the volume in the skin for a more youthful, radiant look. Injections are placed precisely beneath the skin to help smooth out facial wrinkles and folds. Juvederm has a slightly thicker consistency than other types of fillers, making it a good choice for moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. It is particularly effective in treating the nasolabial folds and marionette lines, as well as sagging contours in the jaw. It is also a good choice for lip augmentation for those who desire a more natural look and for reshaping the cheek contours. Many find that the gel consistency of Juvederm allows for smoother, more natural-looking results. Juvederm comes in several formulations. Juvederm Ultra is considered the regular filler while Juvederm Ultra Plus is used for deeper facial folds. Juvederm Ultra XC  contains lidocaine for enhanced comfort.

Volbella is an FDA-approved injectable added to the Juvéderm family of dermal fillers. This non-surgical lip augmentation treatment is designed to plump the lips and minimize the appearance of fine lines around the mouth, also known as perioral rhytids or perioral lines.

Juvederm VOLUX is the latest to the family. The fast-acting dermal filler is perfect for adding more definition to the jawline. The results typically last between 12-18 months, making it one of the longest-lasting fillers on the market. If you’re interested in increasing the definition in your face or adding volume where it may have been lost, VOLUX might be the best solution for you.

Candidates for Juvederm

Candidates for treatment with Juvederm are in good physical health and are realistic in their expectations for improvement. Patients should understand that repeat treatments are needed in order to maintain the effect as results are temporary.

The Juvederm Procedure

Juvederm injections are performed in the office setting and take just fifteen minutes or so to complete. A topical or local anesthetic or nerve block may be used during treatment. Because Juvederm Ultra XC contains lidocaine, patients typically find the injection to be very tolerable though a local anesthetic can still be used to numb the area. A very fine needle is used to inject the substance into the mid to deep dermis. Several tiny injections are made.

Juvederm Recovery & Results

Side effects are generally rare with Juvederm but may include temporary bruising, swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection site. Nevertheless, the patient can return to normal activities right away. The results of Juvederm injections typically last six to eight months.

Restylane

Restylane is an FDA-approved injectable filler made of a transparent hyaluronic acid gel. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally exists in the human body and helps to nourish and hydrate the skin. Over time, our natural hyaluronic acid diminishes. Restylane can restore the lost hyaluronic acid for a smoother, more youthful appearance. Restylane is commonly used to smooth facial lines and wrinkles, sculpt the lips, and enhance the facial features. It is particularly effective in treating the nasolabial folds which are the lines that extend from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Restylane works by temporarily adding volume.

Candidates for Restylane

Candidates for treatment with Restylane are in good physical health and have realistic expectations for improvement. Patients must understand that improvement with Restylane is temporary and repeat injections are needed to maintain the results. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not be treated with Restylane.

The Restylane Procedure

Restylane injections are performed in the office setting and take anywhere from 5-15 minutes to complete. Local anesthesia or numbing cream may be used for the patient’s comfort. Using a very fine needle, the Restylane is injected beneath the skin in small amounts. Several tiny injections may be made.

Restylane Recovery & Results

The results of Restylane are fully evident within one week and last about six to nine months. Side effects are rare but may include bruising, redness, swelling, and tenderness at the injection site. Swelling may last for several days; however, normal activities can be resumed immediately after treatment. Patients will be advised to stay out of the sun for a period of time.

Radiesse

Radiesse is an FDA-approved injectable filler comprised of calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in gel. Radiesse is injected beneath the skin where it effectively restores volume that has diminished with age, reducing the appearance of wrinkles, depressions, and other skin imperfections. Radiesse has a firmer consistency than many other injectable fillers, making it a good choice for filling deep lines like the marionette lines and for contouring areas like the cheekbones or jawline. It is commonly used to treat the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, depressed scars, and sunken cheeks. It is also sometimes used for nasal contouring. Radiesse offers the long-lasting correction of aging signs by producing an initial plumping of the skin followed by extended correction as new tissue regenerates.

Candidates for Radiesse

Candidates for Radiesse treatment are men and women who have realistic expectations for improvement and are in good physical health. Though results are longer lasting than many other fillers, they are still temporary and require repeat injections in order to maintain results.

The Radiesse Procedure

Radiesse injections are performed in the office setting and take just fifteen minutes or so to complete. There is typically minimal discomfort associated with the injection; however, an ice pack, nerve block, or topical anesthetic may be used to reduce discomfort. The substance is injected into the subdermal plane of the skin using a very fine needle. Several small injections are made and the treatment area is gently massaged afterward to help ensure smooth results.

Radiesse Recovery & Results

There is minimal downtime or recovery following treatment with Radiesse. Some minor bruising, redness, swelling or itching may occur at the injection site but these side effects are generally short-lived and resolve quickly. Patients are able to resume their normal activities immediately after treatment, though they are advised to stay out of the sun for a period of time. Full results are seen within one week of injection and typically last one to two years.

Voluma

Manufactured by Juvederm, which also manufactures several other successful facial injectables, this unique and innovative injectable facial filler is designed specifically for the facial contours, notably the cheek area. It is designed to be injected underneath the skin and add volume. As the natural aging process takes place, fat pads begin to shift and fat is lost from the face. This can cause the face to look more aged, with sunken cheeks and a more hollow appearance. Putting the volume back in the cheeks and face contour has the ability to take up to five years off the appearance of your face and reveal a more youthful, rested-looking appearance. It is an injectable gel that is safe and FDA-approved. Made from a natural complex sugar known as hyaluronic acid, it is safe because the body also naturally produces this substance. With age, our bodies begin to produce less of this substance. Hyaluronic acid partners with collagen and elastin found within the skin to form healthy skin structure and elasticity.

Why use Voluma?

Imagine being able to take five years off your face with a simple procedure that takes around fifteen to thirty minutes to perform. Lift and add volume to flattened cheeks. Rejuvenate your appearance and look more rested. Add back youthfulness to your appearance and feel more confident. Flattened cheeks and a loss of volume in the face can take a toll on the facial appearance, causing it to look tired and aged. You may look tired even when you are not.

Weight loss can be an excellent lifestyle change, but often the loss of facial volume is also a result. If you recently lost weight, you may also want to consider this procedure to put back volume in your face. Adding volume to the cheek area can add to the attractiveness of your face and emphasize your face contour. Cheek filler can help you achieve emphasized cheekbones, which is a very attractive feature.

The Procedure

Before this procedure, your doctor will provide a consultation in which you discuss why you are interested in cheek filler and what changes you would like to see after this procedure. This is a non-surgical procedure and the treatment time generally takes between fifteen and thirty minutes. Before starting, your face will be cleaned with a hygienic formula to prep the area for injection. A topical numbing cream will then be applied to the area, ensuring your comfort.

A very fine needle will be used to treat the area and Dr. Smith will inject it into your cheeks. He may then gently massage the area to help it settle. After this, you are free to return to work or other activities as you normally would. Some patients may experience minor bruising, but this can be covered with makeup.

Are You a Candidate?

This procedure is suitable for individuals aged 21 and over. If you would like to achieve added volume in your cheeks and are concerned about the signs of aging, you are a candidate for this procedure. Our doctors can help determine whether or not this procedure is the right one for you. He will be able to determine this based on an array of factors including your age, what you would like to achieve, your skin type, and your medical history.

Dermal Filler Considerations

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding as the safety of these products for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding has not been studied.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of excessive scarring, keloid formations, or pigmentation disorders, as the use of these products may result in additional scars or changes in pigmentation.
  • Tell your doctor if you are planning laser treatments or a chemical peel, as there is a possible risk of inflammation at the treatment site if these procedures are performed after treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you are on immunosuppressive therapy used to decrease your immune response, as the use of these products may result in an increased risk of infection.
  • Tell your doctor if you are using medications that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or other blood thinners, as this may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site.
  • The safety and effectiveness of RHA® fillers in areas other than those indicated have not been established in U.S. clinical studies.
  • Patients who experience skin injury near the site of injection with this product may be at a higher risk for side effects.
  • Minimize strenuous exercise, exposure to extensive sun or heat, and alcoholic beverages within the first 24 hours following treatment.

FAQS: What are the possible side effects?

It is important to note that this filler is an FDA-approved substance and is considered safe. Many patients do well with it, but it is possible to experience side effects that are generally minor. Some possible side effects include:

  • Redness and swelling of the treated area
  • Firmness at the injection site
  • Minor lumps or bumps
  • Bruising
  • Itching
  • Discoloration

Keep in mind that this procedure has been studied during clinical trials for many years. It is considered safe and is tolerated very well by most patients.

What are Perioral Wrinkles?

These are age-related facial wrinkles caused by a loss of elasticity in the skin around your mouth. Combined with the constant movement of your facial muscles, this causes even minor lip lines to deepen and become more pronounced.

Furthermore, collagen and elastin are essential to keeping skin healthy and plump. But, since we lose both proteins over time, our skin loses its youthful appearance and wrinkles form.

How long will the procedure last?

The beautiful results are instantaneous and can be seen for up to two years after the initial injection. After this amount of time, it is metabolized by the body and additional treatments are needed if desired. However, at the second treatment time, less filler will be needed to see results.

It is recommended to avoid very grueling exercise for the first 24 hours following treatment in order to extend the life of this procedure. Additionally, avoiding the sun will help to preserve it and help it last its longest. Avoiding the sun has other added benefits, as it will preserve your skin and prevent aging and melanoma, so this is a win-win.

What can I expect after the procedure?

You can expect to resume normal activities right after the procedure. You may experience minor swelling or redness at the injection site, but this is normal and should subside within a few day’s time. It is generally minor and can be easily covered with makeup. You can expect to see instant results.

How soon can I return to work?

There is no downtime with this procedure and it only takes fifteen to thirty minutes. You can return to work immediately and resume all normal activities, but you should avoid strenuous activity to help maintain the lifetime of this treatment. For the first 24 hours following your treatment, patients are advised to completely avoid any activity that requires a lot of physical exertion. You should also avoid sun exposure.

Is it painful?

A topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area before beginning the procedure. Most patients don’t report any serious discomfort during or after the procedure and tolerate it quite well.
